Montreal-Based Engineering Firm WSP Positions Itself for Growth in Clean Energy and Environmental Projects

May 2024

WSP, a Montreal-based engineering and design firm, is poised for growth, anticipating increased demand for its services due to new EPA regulations, particularly in addressing PFAS concerns. CEO Alexandre L’Heureux envisions expanding opportunities in environmental work and is strategically investing in clean energy talent to position the company as a leader in the green transition.

One significant project highlighting WSP's commitment to clean energy is its role as a design and consenting service partner for the U.K. National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade, a major initiative in England and Wales. This project marks a substantial step toward a more sustainable energy infrastructure.

Financially, WSP reported positive first-quarter results, with revenues reaching CA$3.59 billion and profits rising to CA$126.8 million, demonstrating a 2.7% and 12.7% increase, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the firm's backlog grew to CA$14.2 billion, indicating a 2.9% increase.

Acquisitions have played a significant role in WSP's growth strategy, with the company making four acquisitions in the first quarter alone. These acquisitions, coupled with productivity improvements, have contributed to the firm's expansion. L’Heureux emphasized the importance of acquisitions in WSP's growth trajectory, signaling the company's intention to continue its M&A activity.

Despite its focus on environmental and clean energy projects, WSP remains committed to its expertise in infrastructure and transportation. Recent wins include a $100 million project management contract with Los Angeles County Metro to build a 15-mile light rail line connecting southeast L.A. County to downtown Los Angeles. The company also sees opportunities for growth in the water and advanced manufacturing sectors.

While some competitors are shifting focus to smaller projects, WSP remains committed to pursuing megaprojects, highlighting its confidence in its capabilities and the potential for continued growth in various sectors.
