Webuild's Fisia Italimpianti Commences Construction on $439 Million Water Treatment Plant in Saudi Arabia's Zuluf Oil Field

April 2024

Last year, Fisia Italimpianti, a subsidiary of Webuild, secured two contracts totaling $439 million for the construction of a water treatment plant as part of the Zuluf onshore oil plant complex in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. This venture marks Fisia Italimpianti's entry into the oil and gas sector, expanding its footprint beyond its leadership position in the water market.

The Zuluf oil field, operated by Aramco, is a crucial component of Saudi Arabia's development program under the ambitious Saudi Vision 2030. The project, awarded to Fisia Italimpianti, encompasses both the construction and management of the plant, signaling the company's return to operations and maintenance activities.

Following extensive engineering design and preparatory work to enhance soil conditions, construction has commenced on the site. Once operational, the plant will have the capacity to treat up to 185,000 cubic meters of water per day, which will be utilized for offshore well injection, thus enhancing crude oil production.

The plant's features include a water de-gassing system to extract, compress, and deliver gas found in the water, followed by water treatment and filtration to reduce solid content, ensuring its suitability for injection into oil wells. Additionally, auxiliary systems and various buildings, including administrative offices, technical rooms, and control rooms, will be constructed as part of the project.

Fisia Italimpianti has a strong presence in the Middle East, having previously executed projects in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain, providing innovative water treatment solutions to over 20 million users.

In addition to the Zuluf project, Webuild Group is actively involved in several other significant endeavors in Saudi Arabia. Notably, it is constructing a 57-kilometer high-speed railway line for NEOM and recently secured a contract for the construction of a lake and distinctive architectural features at Trojena. Moreover, the company is undertaking the construction of Line 3 of Riyadh's metro system and the development of Diriyah Square, which includes a multi-storey parking facility for 10,500 vehicles, underscoring its commitment to infrastructure development in the region.
