Kazakhstan and Malaysia Partner for Growth in Construction Sector

May 2024

A high-level investment roundtable co-chaired by Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on May 17th yielded promising developments for the construction industries of both nations.

Investment Opportunities Emerge

The roundtable, as reported by the Prime Minister’s press service, concluded with over US $350 million in signed agreements and memorandums of understanding (MOUs). While details of specific construction projects were not disclosed, the broader economic discussions highlighted potential areas of collaboration relevant to the building sector.

Focus on Diversification and Innovation

Prime Minister Bektenov emphasized Kazakhstan's intention to diversify its export base, potentially including construction materials and expertise. This opens doors for Malaysian construction firms to explore partnerships with Kazakh counterparts in areas such as:

  • Building Material Supply: Collaboration on the production and supply of construction materials in Kazakhstan could benefit both nations.
  • Joint Ventures: Partnering on construction projects in Kazakhstan, leveraging Malaysian expertise and potentially incorporating Kazakh materials, could be mutually advantageous.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Collaboration on innovative construction technologies and best practices can enhance the overall industry standards in both countries.

Existing Foundation for Collaboration

The presence of 48 Malaysian-invested companies currently operating in Kazakhstan, along with 17 ongoing joint investment projects exceeding US $410 million, demonstrates a strong foundation for further construction-related partnerships.

Broader Economic Partnership

The roundtable discussions extended beyond construction, fostering collaboration across various sectors like finance and services. This comprehensive approach can create a more favorable economic environment for construction activities in both countries.

This high-level engagement signifies a significant step forward for Kazakhstan and Malaysia's construction industries. By capitalizing on identified opportunities and building on established ties, both nations can unlock new avenues for growth and innovation in their respective construction sectors.
